Quién es Santiago?

 Mi nombre es Santiago, soy un Arquitecto al que la vida tomó por sorpresa y convirtió en un fotógrafo que viaja por el mundo.

Mi vida ha sido toda una aventura estos últimos años... Les cuento mi historia:

My life has been a crazy adventure lately... This is my story:

 

 Algo sobre mi:

• Nací y crecí en La Ciudad de México.
• Soy el mas chico de 3 hermanos.
• Crecí jugando con Legos todo el día - Cuando era niño odiaba mis chinos, entonces me escapaba con el peluquero y le pedía un corte “Lacio” y como era imposible... me rapaba...
• Estudié semestres de intercambio en San Francisco y Barcelona
• Disfruto mucho estar solo.
• Mi mayor miedo en la vida es estar a punto de morir y pensar “Pude haber hecho más, me pude haber divertido más, pude haber visto más".

 

Things about me:

• Born and raised in México City.
• I'm the youngest of 3 siblings.
• I grew up building Legos all day and being weird.
• I hated my curls when I was a kid so I used to escape to the salon and asked for a “straight” cut. They just shaved my head.
• Studied semesters abroad in San Francisco and Barcelona
• I enjoy being alone.
• My biggest fear in life is to be in my death bed thinking “I could´ve done more, I could´ve had more fun, I could´ve seen more”.

 

 Tengo dos grandes pasiones en la vida; la Arquitectura y la Fotografía.

Opté por estudiar Arquitectura ya que es mucho más fácil aprender fotografía por tu cuenta que Arquitectura... Nunca podría dejar de hacer ninguna de las dos. Terminando la universidad abrí mi propio despacho de Arquitectura y empecé a diseñar y construir pequeñas obras para familiares y conocidos. Poco a poco fui adquiriendo experiencia y haciendo proyectos más grandes.  Estos son algunos:

I have two passions; Designing and Photography. After high school, when I had to choose a career I went for Architecture, I thought I could be an Architect and in my free time learn photography by myself. It´s kinda hard to do it the other way around... I could never stop doing either. Both are my jobs and hobby. I would do both for free, That's how much I love them. Right out of College I founded my own Architecture Firm and started designing and building small things for family and friends, once on track... the firm kept growing. Here are some of the things I designed and built:

 

En los momentos que no estudiaba/trabajaba como arquitecto siempre estaba tomando fotos. Llevaba mi cámara a todos lados, tomando fotos de paisajes, viajes y extraños en la calle... En ese entonces no tenía idea que algún día tomaría fotos de mujeres, pensaba que eso era para fotógrafos profesionales.

When I was not working as an architect, I was always shooting. I took my camera everywhere, focusing on landscape, travel, and urban photography. Back then I didn´t even think of the possibility of shooting models. I thought that was for professionals. Here are some of my first photos:

 

La primera vez que le tomé fotos a una mujer fue cuando una amiga mia necesitaba unas fotos para su book de modelaje. Ella no tenía dinero para pagar un fotógrafo y me pidió ayuda con las fotos. Los dos quedamos contentos con las fotos que hicimos. Fue muy interesante la interacción con la modelo, cosa que nunca había experimentado tomando fotos de paisajes o arquitectura. A los pocos días de eso, varias de sus amigas me buscaron para que también les hiciera fotos, y así comenzó todo...

The first time I shot with a woman happened when a friend needed photos for her modeling portfolio but didn´t have money for a photographer so she asked me to help her. I thought it would be fun, and did it. Both I and her loved the result. Working with a model is completely different because you can control how she acts, I was used to shooting landscapes or strangers in the street, Where I had no control at all. I loved this new interaction. And apparently, the results were good because the next week 3 friends of those girls asked me for photos too, and then it all begun... Here are some photos from that first shoot:

 

Después de eso seguí tomándole fotos a mujeres cada vez que se presentaba la oportunidad. Comencé a entender mejor la luz y crear mi propio estilo. Un estilo que se formó gracias a estas circunstancias: - Nunca tomé una clase de fotografía, por lo que al no conocer la teoría, el aprendizaje fue a base de prueba y error. Al no saber las reglas, yo hacía cosas que en teoría están “mal”, pero como a mi me gustaba el resultado seguía por ese camino. - No tenía un Flash ni Luces, dependía totalmente de la luz natural, por lo que aprendí a aprovecharla. Hasta el día de hoy, nunca he comprado un flash ni usado ningún tipo de luz artificial en mis fotos. No me gusta, siento que le quita lo real al momento, siente que se ve falso. - Le tomaba fotos a amigas que no eran modelos profesionales, por lo que ni ellas sabían posar ni yo dirigirlas. Esto hizo que las fotos se vean más naturales, sin poses ni pretensiones. Para mi la naturalidad es lo más importante. Hoy en día no me gusta trabajar con modelos, ya que sin pensarlo empiezan a posar como si fueran fotos de moda o para revistas,  no me encanta eso.

I kept shooting girls every time I could. practicing a lot and trying to understand light better to create my own style. Now looking back at it, I see that my way of shooting was carved by circumstances, not by choice. These main circumstances: - I never received formal photography education, so I had no idea about the theory or rules for taking photos. Everything I learned was by trial and error, also by not knowing the rules, often I did things that were wrong in theory but because I liked the way they turned out. - I didn't have a flash or any kind of lights, I had to rely 100% on natural light, so I learned to make the most of out of it. Till now, I haven't bought or used any flash or artificial life in my shoots. I don´t like it, I feel it takes away the “real” to the moment, I feel it looks fake. - By shooting friends who were not models, the fact that I didn’t know how to direct models and the didn’t know how to pose, made the photos look more natural, without pretentiousness or poses. Naturality is the most important thing for me. That's why I´m not a big fan of working with models because unconsciously they start posing in front of the camera, making the photos look like magazine shoots or fashion photography. I´m not a fan of that.

 

Y luego llegó Instagram... para este punto ya tenía muchas fotos, por lo que sólo empecé a subirlas a Instagram todos los días. Para mi sorpresa, en cuestión de semanas ya tenía miles de seguidores. Eso me motivó a seguir tomando fotos y seguir posteándolas. Cuanto tenía alrededor de 50,000 seguidores, mujeres de otros países me empezaron a invitar a que les tomara fotos. Amo viajar, y de esta forma, como ellas me invitaban a sus casas, me salía muy barato hacerlo. Así pude viajar por varias ciudades de Estados Unidos. Ellas me llevaban a conocer la ciudad, a sus planes y fiestas. Iba conociendo el mundo y haciendo amigos mientras tomaba fotos. Así es como nació el concepto de “Viajando Con Followers”

Then Instagram came... By this point I had probably a hundred photos, so I just started posting them every day. To my surprise... in a matter of weeks I had thousands of followers! This motivated me to shoot new photos and keep posting. I Had around 50,000 followers when girls from other countries started asking me if I could go visit them to shoot. I ended up visiting a lot of cities in the USA. The girls hosted me while I was there so it was not expensive at all to do it. I always had a great time both touring and shooting. Exploring the world and making new friends. This is how the concept of “Traveling With Followers” was born.

 

Instagram inclusive cambió mi vida amorosa. Al hace un concurso de fotografía con mis seguidores, conocí a Taylor. Nos hicimos buenos amigos y después de meses de hablar sólo por teléfono me invitó a visitarla a Denver. Desde el primer día que nos conocimos en persona nos hicimos novios. Nuestra relación a distancia se convirtió en un pequeño reality show que compartimos con nuestros followers. Fuimos novios por más de un año hasta que la distancia complicó las cosas y nos separamos. Pero seguimos siendo buenos amigos hoy en día.

Instagram even changed my love life. After doing a contest with my followers, I met Taylor. We became good friends and she invited me to visit her in Denver. Since the first day we met in person we became a couple. The long-distance relationship between us was like a little Instagram reality show that we shared with our followers. This went on for more than a year. Distance is tough and we broke up. But we are still good friends today.

 

Mi cuenta siguió creciendo, y más personas se interesaban en mi trabajo, hasta el punto dónde llegó más allá de Instagram y varios sitios de Internet y Blogs empezaron a hacer notas sobre mis fotos :)

My account kept growing and more people become interested in my work, to the point that it went beyond Instagram and some websites and blogs started featuring my work :)

 

Después pasó la barrera digital y varias revistas importantes en México y otros países se interesaron en publicar mis fotos. Revistas: Esquire, Soho, TimeOut, Revista H, Maxim, Life & Style, Photo Magazine (France),  Status Magazine (Brasil), Farándula (Guatemala), Insta Photographers (libro)

Then it went beyond the digital barrier and books and important magazines in México and other countries featured my work too. Magazines: Esquire, Soho, TimeOut, Revista H, Maxim, Life & Style, Photo Magazine (France), Status Magazine (Brasil), Farándula (Guatemala), InstaPhotographers (book).

 

Las cosas se pusieron mejor cuando varios programas de TV me llamaron para ser entrevistado en vivo. Soy muy mal estando enfrente de una cámara, fué todo un reto. Me dejé llevar, no sabía ni qué estaba pasando, pero lo disfrutaba y me divertía. Aquí llegó de nuevo el amor a mi vida cuando en una entrevista conocí a Erika Zaba, una cantante pop de un grupo llamado OV7.  Recuerdo haber escuchado sus canciones durante toda mi secundaria. Fuimos novios casi dos años, ahora somos amigos.

Things started to get crazy when several TV shows called me and invited me to get interviewed on air.  I´m the worst guy in front of a camera, thas was a big challenge. I just went with the flow, hardly believing what was happening to my life. In one of these TV shows love knocked again and I met Erika Zaba. She is a singer from a band called OV7 whose songs I used to dance through all my high school. We dated for almost 2 years. We are still friends.

 

Televisa, una cadena de TV en México me contactó para hacer un experimento y crear un web/reality-show durante la Copa Mundial en Brasil. Claro que no tardé ni 2 segundos en aceptar y empezar a empacar para irme a Brasil, donde con ayuda de mis followers pude vivir el mejor mes de mi vida. Lo que fué la primera temporada oficial de “Viajando con Followers”.

Televisa, a big TV Network in México contacted me to do an experiment and produce a web reality show during the World Cup in Brazil. Of course, It didn´t even take me 2 seconds to pack my stuff and fly to Brazil, and with the help of my followers I experience the most amazing month of my life, the first official season of “Traveling with Followers”.

 

Hace algunos años ya trabajaba como arquitecto, pasando la mayoría de mi tiempo estrasado con clientes y trabajadores. Y ahora... durante estos últimos años he viajado más que en toda mi vida y conocido gente increíble. Participado en colaboraciones con revistas, libros, radio y TV. Produje mi primer video clip musical para una banda y hasta mi propio reality Show. No hay mañana en la que despierte y no piense “Qué %$# está pasando?”. No estoy ni cerca de considerar esto como algo seguro, y se que es una oportunidad que no se presenta todos los días. Por eso cada día que despierto trato de aprovechar al máximo lo que la vida tenga para mi. Siempre totalmente agradecido con mis seguidores porque gracias al apoyo a lo largo de todo este tiempo, puedo vivir este sueño. Los quiero!

Its been years now since I was working as an Architect, spending most of my time arguing with contractors and clients. And now... I´ve been lucky enough to travel to several countries and cities, met amazing people, been featured in magazines, blogs, radio, and TV shows, Produced and hosted my own reality show and a Video music for a band! Every morning I wake up and think “WTF just happened?” hahaha. I don´t take all this for granted. I know its an amazing opportunity. That's why every day I try to make the most out of what life brings to me. ALWAYS feeling very grateful with my followers, I know its thanks to them and all their support that I have the fortune of living this adventure.
